NSS of North Texas is a chapter of the National Space Society, an independent, international, educational, grassroots non-profit organization dedicated to the creation of a spacefaring civilization. Founded in 1974 by Wernher von Braun, NSS is widely acknowledged as the preeminent citizen's voice on space.
In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, NSS of North Texas endeavors to educate the public about the benefits of space exploration, exploitation (such as tourism) and colonization. The chapter has held lectures at museums and libraries, listened to informative speakers, watched the latest space-themed movies at a theater and rewritten the Space Exploration Handbook for the Boy Scouts. In December, the chapter usually has a Christmas party in lieu of a meeting.
On May 24-28, 2007, NSS of North Texas hosted the International Space Development Conference, an annual convention organized by NSS, for the first time at the Hotel InterContinental in Addison. Astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Rusty Schweickart and Shannon Lucid were guest speakers, along with John Carmack of Armadillo Aerospace (based in Mesquite), Eric Anderson of Space Adventures, Steve Squyres of NASA JPL (Mars Exploration Rovers mission) and Robert Zubrin of the Mars Society. Many others gave presentations about space transportation, lunar colonization, Mars exploration and other topics following the theme, "From Old Frontiers to New." Armadillo Aerospace displayed its prototype lunar lander, named Pixel. Also, there was an art show and a track for educators (including a moon rock certification program). Despite frequent rain, it was a great experience for space enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and activists!
